Even though most homes are now equipped with central heating, a great living room still boast a traditional Open Fire or Stove. In some cases, the fireplace contains a fuel effect gas fire that provides the comforting aspects of a genuine Open Fire without the inconvenience, however traditionalists still prefer to burn real fuel as the warm glow emanating from the Open Fire is enough justification to own one as the centrepiece for any living room.

In order for an Open Fire to function properly, it needs a ready supply of oxygen and an efficient means of escape for smoke and gases. If either of these is eliminated, the fire is stifled and will eventually go out. An Open Fire is usually built on a barred fire grate, through which ash and debris fall into a removable ash pan. Continuing in the construction of the Open Fire, fire frets are an essential item for finishing off the front of a fireplace.

Fire frets are both aesthetically pleasing to the eye and useful for preventing any coal or solid fuel from dropping onto the hearth area, which could lead to the marble or other material the hearth is made from being damaged. Furthermore, any hot coals or solid fuel that gets on the hearth could prevent a danger to individuals within the household including pets and small children.

As combustion occurs and the fire begins to give off heat to warm the household, due to the burning of generally solid fuels there is always residual ash that will continue to build up as more solid fuel, such as coal is burnt. As a result, with Open Fires it is essential that general maintenance is kept to ensure that the fire is working as efficiently and effectively as possible therefore, Ash Carriers solve the problem of carrying hot ash through the house to be disposed in the dustbin outside. They are lightweight boxes designed with an easy carrying handle, which is the ideal and perfect companion to any fireplace or all night burner.

As the fuel burns on an Open Fire, it gives off heated gases, these expand and become lighter than the surrounding air, therefore they begin to rise, sucking oxygen in the form of fresh air, up through the base of the Open Fire to maintain even combustion. In order to prevent the surrounding area from damage due to the high temperatures and combustion of the Open Fire with the open flames, the area around the fire is often constructed from heat resistant fire bricks.
